Renewing car recycling in the sustainability transition low-carbon circular-economy car dismantling line and ecosystem (car dismantling line 2.0)

The aim of the project is to renew the car dismantling industry by developing a low-carbon and circular car dismantling line and an ecosystem that improves the reuse of car parts and the recycling of materials. The project is coordinated by the circular economy business models research group of Turku University of Applied Sciences, and the City of Turku is the second implementer. The development work also includes vehicle and transport technology and manufacturing technology research groups from the University of Applied Sciences and Turku Vocational Institute TAI as well as companies in the field. In particular, the target group is car demolition plants, recycling operators, SMEs in the automotive industry, and other companies involved in material flows in the automotive life cycle. The project will build a collaborative network in which companies and educational institutions in the field will jointly develop new operating models and solutions. The project pilots and tests new demolition methods, such as robotics and automation, and develops digital solutions for managing material flows and determining market demand for automotive parts. Workshops, webinars and seminars are also organized to increase knowledge and disseminate results.
The expected results of the project will be a modern concept model of the car dismantling line that meets the requirements of companies and legislation and enables profitable and sustainable business. The new operating methods and solutions can be directly utilized in the operations of companies and can be scaled up nationally and internationally. At the same time, the circular economy ecosystem and competence cluster related to ELV cars (End-of-Life Vehicles) will be strengthened in Finland.
The project promotes the green transition and mitigation of climate change by reducing the use of natural resources and CO2 emissions and supports the EU and Finland’s sustainable growth strategies. The result is competence and concrete tools for companies and organizations in the field to implement the sustainability transition, and the project also supports equality, equality and accessibility at all stages. The long-term impact of the project will be reflected in the renewal of the sector, improved material cycle efficiency and reduced environmental load..
