As part of the “Car Dismantling Line 2.0” project, the feasibility and time implications of the end-of-life vehicle dismantling process are being examined in accordance with the European Union’s forthcoming regulation on circularity requirements for vehicle design and management of end-of-life vehicles. A demonstration was conducted in April 2026 at the Autocirc facility in Nurmijärvi. The study focused specifically on the requirements set out in Part C of Annex 7 of the proposed regulation, which specify the parts and components that must be removed from an end-of-life vehicle prior to shredding.
Source Separation Demonstration of Vehicle-Derived Plastics
As part of the “Car Dismantling Line 2.0” project, the possibilities for source-separation of various material streams during vehicle dismantling are studied. The upcoming regulation on the circularity requirements for vehicle design mandates that authorized treatment facilities remove intact parts and components from end-of-life vehicles for reuse, as well as materials for recycling. The study evaluated the feasibility of source-separating vehicle-derived plastics through a practical dismantling trial. All plastic material deemed suitable for recycling was removed from a test vehicle, sorted based on material markings, and weighed by plastic type.
